Danny Masterson’s wife, Bijou Phillips, was in court when the actor was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for two rapes he committed in 2003.
The “Raising Hope” actress — who tied the knot with her fellow Scientologist in 2011 — reportedly remained stoic and even kept her sunglasses on when the judge declared his ruling on Sept. 7, 2023.
Despite reports initially claiming she planned to stick by Masterson’s side, she filed for divorce from the actor less than two weeks after his sentencing.
Here’s everything you need to know about Phillips.
She has famous parents
Phillips is the daughter of the Mamas & the Papas vocalist John Phillips and model-actress Genevieve Waite.
The pair split when Bijou was a child and she was placed in foster care after neither parent was deemed fit to care for her.
John eventually won custody of her when she was in the third grade and they moved to Long Island, New York.
Her father died in 2001 and her mother passed away in 2019.
She was a New York socialite
When she was just 14, Bijou quit school and moved into a New York City apartment near Fifth Avenue with her own housekeeper.
She quickly became a tabloid fixture, known for her excessive partying and her friendships with fellow socialites like Paris and Nicky Hilton.
“If you were 14 years old and able to live on your own in an apartment in New York City, and you got invited to all these clubs, and you got a bank account and you had a car service you could call so that you could go wherever you wanted — what would happen?” she said in a 2002 interview with The Observer.
The outlet described her as a “wild child” and Bijou admitted to drinking and taking drugs such as cocaine, ecstasy and heroin.
She was also a model throughout her teenage years, appearing on the cover of “Interview” magazine when she was 13 and the infamous 1995 Calvin Klein underwear ads that sparked a child pornography investigation.
She’s an actress
In her 20s, Bijou ditched modeling in favor of acting.
Her first major film appearance was in the 1999 flick “Black and White.”
It was followed by a slew of roles in movies like “Almost Famous,” “Bully,” “The Door in the Floor” and “Choke.”
Most notably, she starred in the TV series “Raising Hope” from 2010 to 2013.
She has one daughter
Bijou and Masterson said “I do” on Oct. 18, 2011, at a private castle in Ireland after dating for seven years.
Less than three years later, they welcomed their daughter, Fianna, on Feb. 14, 2014.
“Hello friends. Beyond thrilled to announce the birth of our daughter Fianna Francis Masterson!” the father of one wrote on Instagram at the time.
“Mom and baby are doing amazing. You can all refer to me as dj dadpants from now on.”
Fianna was nine years old at the time of Masterson’s sentencing.
She received a kidney transplant
In 2017, Bijou was rushed to hospital with a blood infection.
A rep for the actress told TMZ at the time that she was born with small kidneys and had been suffering from kidney disease her whole life.
However, the infection meant she required a transplant, which she received in April of that year.
She was ‘devastated’ by her husband’s sentencing
In May 2023, Masterson was convicted of raping two women.
The following month, a source told People that Bijou was “shocked and devastated” over the ruling.
“She wasn’t prepared for the verdict,” the insider said.
“She never expected him to be found guilty. She couldn’t believe that he was taken into custody right away and remanded.”
Bijou also allegedly felt “terrified” over the thought of having to raise her daughter alone.
California Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo reminded Masterson at his sentencing that he was “not the victim.”
The judge said in court, according to journalist Meghann Cuniff, “Your actions 20 years ago took away another person’s choice and voice. Your actions 20 years ago today were criminal, and that’s why you are here.”
