Her style is painting the town red.
Doja Cat is talking about the “shock response” from fans to some of her wildest looks to date and claims she’s “accepted” the inevitable backlash.
Doja, 27, discussed her famously wild style when she was named a Harper’s Bazaar Icon alongside stars including Kendall Jenner, Zaya Wade and Paul Mescal.
“My theory is that if someone has never met me in real life, then, subconsciously, I’m not real to them,” Doja explained.
“So when people become engaged with someone they don’t even know on the internet, they kind of take ownership over that person.”
“They think that person belongs to them in some sense. And when that person changes drastically, there is a shock response that is almost uncontrollable,” the “Attention” singer continued.
“I’ve accepted that that’s what happens,” the “Woman” singer, who’s known for her wild ensembles, including cat ears on the Met Gala red carpet, bondage-inspired black latex and a face full of false eyelashes admitted.
“So I put my wigs on and take them off. I shave my head or my eyebrows. I have all the freedom in the world.”
Doja (born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini) has famously gone through drastic fashion and beauty changes throughout her career, from buzzing her hair and eyebrows to getting inked up with tats her fans called “creepy.”
Doja, who’s gearing up to headline the upcoming Victoria’s Secret World Tour, famously has a contentious relationship with her devoted fanbase, who call themselves “Kittenz,” despite her distaste for the name.
The “Kiss Me More” rapper recently lost more than 250,000 Instagram followers after attacking them online and calling them “creepy.”
However, the backlash doesn’t stop Doja from soaking up all the attention.
