Kevin Costner learned that the late Princess Diana “kind of” had a crush on him through her son Prince William.
The actor met Diana to discuss possibly co-starring in a never-made sequel of his 1992 film, “The Bodyguard.”
“about 15 years later …. I ultimately had a very sweet conversation with Prince William,” Costner told People in an interview published Tuesday. “I happened to be over in England and got this message that the prince would love to talk to [me].”

Costner said he met up with the Prince of Wales, now 41, in a room by themselves with chairs stacked up around them.
“There was nobody else,” the “Yellowstone” alum claimed. “We sat down and shook hands and the first line out of his mouth was, ‘You know, my mom kind of fancied you.'”
Costner pointed at himself in disbelief that Diana could have feelings for him, saying sarcastically, “I know.”
Although Costner and William talked for a half hour, the actor will “never ever say what” they discussed.
He noted, “It was a very sweet thing. We just chatted and we both broke away and we never became pen pals or did anything like that.
“But I’ve had such fond memories of who he was, how I was approached and what we talked about,” Costner continued.
The “Horizon” star noted that he has never told this story before but felt the anecdote illustrates why he has so much respect for the prince.
He clarified that he was initially connected with Diana through Sarah Ferguson, calling the Duchess of York “very cool” about the set up.
“She could have been going, ‘Well, I’m a princess too. What about me?’ She didn’t,” he pointed out of Prince Andrew’s ex-wife. “She said, ‘I’m going to make this happen, Kev,’ and she did. I always respected her that she never inserted herself.”
William, Diana and Ferguson aren’t the only royals to speak with Costner over the years as he has also connected with William’s estranged brother, Prince Harry.
The Duke of Sussex and his wife, Meghan Markle, famously attended Costner’s star-studded charity event at his lavish Santa Barbara, Calif., estate last September.
The Sussexes — who moved to Montecito, Calif., with their two kids after resigning from royal life in 2020 — presented Costner with an honorary award at the event.
