It was certainly making her sweat.
Rocking a dress that won’t last the night comes with a major perk — if you’re no longer feeling it, you can always destroy it.
That’s essentially what “Water” singer Tyla did at the 2024 Met Gala after ascending the stairs in her Balmain gown, which was covered in real sand and custom-cast for her body.
Although she arrived on the red carpet in the body-hugging strapless look that was perfectly on-theme for the night’s “Garden of Time” dress code, the fashion house’s creative director Olivier Rousteing altered the look once inside, grabbing scissors and chopping it into a mini.

“And what you didn’t see…” Olivier Rousteing wrote on his Instagram Story, sharing a video that showed him trimming the dress as Tyla held it up.
Still, while the pro clearly has a steady hand and was able to cut an impressively straight line, there was some of risk involved, of course.
Sources inside the gala tell Page Six Style that members of Tyla’s team were on hand with a hotel robe, just in case something went wrong with the delicate design.
Before the switch up, Tyla shared with Vogue that her look was made of three shades of actual sand, inspired by “the sands of time.”
As she made her way down the red carpet, she also showed off a purse in the shape of an hourglass and gave the crowd a better view of her elaborate manicure, which looked like water dripping from her fingers.
Such a form-fitting creation did make it somewhat difficult to make it up those famous Met steps. Rather than leisurely walking, Tyla had to be carried into the party by multiple men.
However, in the end it was all worth it. Not only did Tyla’s big trim likely make it easier for her to sit, her OG sculpture-like dress landed her a spot on our best dressed list.
Sometimes, the sacrifice is worth it.
