Mackenzie Phillips recalls harrowing, humorous, ‘blood-spattered’ details of ‘Celebrity Rehab’ at podcast fest

There was gallows humor among some gratefully sober celebs at an annual event for the popular addiction and recovery podcast “Dopey.”

Mackenzie Phillips — the onetime sitcom star, and daughter of rocker John Phillips, who has said she spent 11 stints in rehab — recalled how Dr. Drew Pinsky brought the once-struggling star onto his show, “Celebrity Rehab,” for the 2010 season.

Said a source at the podcast event, “Celebrities dug deep into the humor well, as Mackenzie Phillips told stories of how Dr. Drew had to clean blood spatters off her bedroom ceiling as she started her stint on the show ‘Celebrity Rehab.'”

Apparently Phillips said she was in such bad shape at the time, she was “trying to find a vein to shoot heroin into,” our source said, when the blood went flying.

The former “One Day at a Time” star, 63, subsequently became a substance use disorder counselor herself. She previously told Pvnew in an interview: “I was in rehab 10 or 11 times over a 30-year period,” but that more recently, “I have purpose. My life has meaning. I am engaged in a profession that I’m passionate about.”

Said the insider of the “Dopey” gathering, “Each of the stars had their own analogous moments that they shared with laughter and hope.”

Also appearing at the event at the Church of the Holy Apostle and chatting with “Dopey” host Dave Manheim were Hank Azaria, Lili Taylor, Rich Vos, Brandon Novak and Jessa Reed.

The podcast with over 10.5 million downloads has had star guests talk about some of the darkest moments, as well as their hopeful recoveries.

Manheim’s late cohost Chris O’Connor tragically died from an overdose in 2019.

Manheim told us that his show “uses humor and acceptance to eliminate the shame and stigma of the more gritty details of addiction, and engages those struggling no matter where they are at in their journey.”

Also at the event was “Mighty Ducks” child star Shaun Weiss, who we previously reported told the podcast he’d once sold his mentor Judd Apatow’s laptop for $60 to score drugs.
