Dixie D’Amelio is getting candid about how living with premenstrual dysmorphic disorder (PMDD) has impacted her mental health and relationships.
During the Season 3 premiere of “The D’Amelio Show” on Hulu, the 22-year-old revealed that she has to take time off work before her period each month due to “crazy” symptoms, such as “extreme anxiety [and] depression.”
“People are going to be like, ‘Oh my God, everybody gets that.’ Like, no,” D’Amelio said in a confessional.
“I didn’t know that you weren’t supposed to want to die every month before you got your period. It’s not supposed to affect every single aspect in your life from sleep to anxiety.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, PMDD is “a severe, sometimes disabling extension of premenstrual syndrome (PMS)” that “causes extreme mood shifts that can disrupt daily life and damage relationships.”
The TikTok star, who announced her diagnosis in October 2022, noted that her symptoms also include “losing the will to live, irritability and anger.”
Although the “Be Happy” singer hopes that “people around [her] can understand” what she’s going through, she said the diagnosis has been hard on her relationships — especially with her younger sister, Charli D’Amelio, who competed on “Dancing with the Stars” last season.
“It’s tough with Charli and I because she wasn’t really around when I was diagnosed, and I never really explained it to her,” Dixie said.
In another confessional, Charli admitted she never “knows how to react” when she sees her older sister “break down.”
“She either doesn’t want anything to do with me or she wants me to help her,” the 19-year-old explained. “It’s so confusing. I’ve done my own research on PMDD to kind of understand, at least a little bit, but she’s never really explained it to me.”
Although Dixie first opened up about having the disorder last year, the reality TV star said she had been living with the condition for seven years before getting answers.
“I’m very happy that I know what’s wrong because now I can find better ways to handle my emotions,” she told her followers during an Instagram Live.
“I’m feeling better now, and I will probably be going through the same thing next month and the month after that,” the “One Whole Day” singer added.
While Dixie has rarely talked about her health struggles since then, the influencer was hospitalized in May for an unknown reason.
A source told Pvnew at the time that “an ambulance was called” and she “was treated at the hospital for dehydration.”
Despite the scary situation, the singer was able to make it to her D’Amelio Footwear launch later that night.
