It’s a Met mix-up.
Kendall Jenner was one of the most on-theme guests at the 2024 Met Gala on Monday when she brought out a vintage gown from the archives in accordance with the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” theme.
The night and accompanying exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art celebrate, among other motifs, clothing and textiles that are historically significant and too delicate to ever be worn again.

It was thus befitting that Jenner chose a 1999 Givenchy by Alexander McQueen gown that was “never worn by another human” for her red carpet look, with the star telling Vogue, “It’s been sleeping for the last 25 years. It’s literally a ‘sleeping beauty.’ It’s such a special moment. I feel extremely honored that they’re allowing me to wear it.”
But the claim, which the model, 28, repeated at the event, sparked some skepticism among fans.
Fashion history obsessives were quick to shame Jenner, pointing out that while the plunging gown was presented on a mannequin rather than a model — and then immediately sent into McQueen’s archives — Winona Ryder was photographed in the strong-shouldered look for a 1999 edition of Flaunt magazine.
Though some called the “Kardashians” star’s statement that she was the “first human” to wear the cutout dress a “scam,” Page Six Style can confirm that Ryder in fact wore a replica for the photoshoot.
“The house of Givenchy is in a unique transition of creative directors, and the house opened its privately protected archives for Kendall at the Met,” Jenner’s stylist, Dani Michelle, told Vogue of the selection process. “We did a ton of research, specifically on the work of the talented and remembered Alexander McQueen, and Kendall and I both fell in love with this dress. Shockingly, they had it.”
Despite the hubbub, the 818 Tequila founder’s friends and family were loving the look, with Hailey Bieber commenting, “insane,” Gigi Hadid calling her “perfect” and others billing her as best dressed in her Instagram comments.
She continued her streak of never-before-worn looks after the main event, changing into an angelic 1997 Givenchy minidress featuring leather wings across the breastplate.
To finish out the night in style, she let loose in a custom Vivienne Westwood white lace long-sleeved gown as she reunited with ex-boyfriend Bad Bunny at an afterparty.
