August Alsina’s interview revealing Will Smith gave him “his blessing” to date Jada Pinkett Smith has resurfaced after the actress revealed she and her husband are separated.
In June 2020, the “I Luv This S–t” singer shared in an interview with radio host Angela Yee that the “I Am Legend” star had sanctioned his headline-making “entanglement” with Pinkett Smith.
“I actually sat down with Will and had a conversation due to the transformation from their marriage to life partnership. … He gave me his blessing,” Alsina claimed at the time.
The “No Love” singer, 31, said that he fell in love with the “Girls Trip” star, 52, during their romance.
“I totally gave myself to that relationship for years of my life, and I truly and really, really deeply love and have a ton of love for her,” he added.
“I devoted myself to it. I gave my full self to it, so much so to the point that I can die right now and be OK with knowing that I truly gave myself to somebody.”
Soon after Alsina’s interview aired, a rep for Pinkett Smith told Pvnew exclusively the R&B star’s claims were “absolutely not true.”
However, two weeks later, the “Red Table Talk” co-host admitted on her Facebook show that she did have a romantic relationship with Alsina during a time when she and Smith were separated.
Alsina’s interview is now making headlines — again — as Pinkett Smith announced Wednesday that she and the “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” star, 55, have been quietly separated since 2016.
“It was not a divorce on paper, but it was a divorce,” she explained to NBC News, adding that she and Smith currently “live separately.”
The “Worthy” author then revealed why she and her longtime husband never formally announced their separation.
“I think just not being ready yet,” she told Hoda Kotb. “Still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership, right, and in regard to how do we present that to people, you know? And we hadn’t figured that out.”
Despite their lengthy separation, Pinkett Smith said she is not planning to file for divorce.
“I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce,” she shared. “We will work through whatever. And I just haven’t been able to break that promise.”
Jada and Will tied the knot in December 1997 in Maryland.
The couple share two children together: son Jaden, 25, and daughter Willow, 22.
The “Aladdin” star is also dad to son Trey, 30, whom he shares with ex-wife Sheree Zampino.
