These “Tortured Poets” are actually related.
Taylor Swift is allegedly related to famed American poet Emily Dickinson, according to genealogy company Ancestry.
The company claimed, per a new article published by Today, that the “Wild Nights” poet and “Wildest Dreams” singer are sixth cousins, three times removed.

“Swift and Dickinson both descend from a 17th century English immigrant (Swift’s 9th great-grandfather and Dickinson’s 6th great-grandfather who was an early settler of Windsor, Connecticut),” Ancestry shared with the website.
“Taylor Swift’s ancestors remained in Connecticut for six generations until her part of the family eventually settled in northwestern Pennsylvania, where they married into the Swift family line.”
It’s unclear if Swift is aware of her relation to Dickinson, who died in 1886 at the age of 55. However, the pop star has sought inspiration from the revered writer throughout her musical career.
Swift famously referenced Dickinson while discussing her songwriting style during her 2022 speech at the Nashville Songwriters Association International.
“If my lyrics sound like a letter written by Emily Dickinson’s great-grandmother while sewing a lace curtain, that’s me writing in the Quill genre,” she said while accepting the songwriter-artist of the decade award.
Fans also believe that Swift’s ninth studio album, “Evermore,” was also influenced by Dickinson’s work.
Swifties pointed out that Swift announced the new “cottagecore” album in 2020 on Dec. 10, which is Dickinson’s birthday.
Others pointed out how Dickinson closed one of her most romantic poems written for her rumored lover, Sue Gilbert, with the word, “Forevermore,” which may have inspired the name of Swift’s album.
The “Cruel Summer” singer also described the album art of her eighth studio album “Folklore” to be, “this girl sleepwalking through the forest in a nightgown in 1830,” which was the year Dickinson was born.
And paying homage to her poetic roots, Swift announced in February that she would be releasing her new album titled “The Tortured Poets Department.”
Dickinson famously battled with mental health issues and was said to have suffered from depression, anxiety, and agoraphobia, among other disorders.
