Swifties are heartbroken over Jason Kelce’s retirement.
Several of Taylor Swift’s superfans took to social media to share their reactions to the Philadelphia Eagles center’s reported plans to leave the NFL — despite openly admitting they had no idea who he was before the pop star’s romance with his brother, Travis Kelce.
“why am i crying over some football player i’d never heard of 6 months ago,” one person asked on X, formerly known as Twitter, over a video of Jason, 36, appearing emotional Monday after his team lost their final game of the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Another fan added over a clip of Jason looking downcast as he walked back to the locker room, “Here I am crying over the loss of Taylor’s boyfriend’s brother.”
A third, noting the humor in their recent affinity for the Kelce family, chimed in, “IF YOU TOLD ME THIS TIME LAST YEAR ID BE STANDING IN MY BATHROOM CRYING OVER A EAGLES GAME I WOULD HAVE LAUGHED.”
Meanwhile, a fourth person wrote, “Why am I sitting here crying over my emotional support pop stars boyfriends brother crying over maybe not playing football anymore. Make it make sense.”
Although Jason has yet to publicly make a formal announcement, ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news that the dad of three had told his teammates Monday he was leaving the league after a 13-year run.
Despite what Jason officially decides, Swift’s fans will still have his younger brother, Travis, to root for.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, discussed his own retirement plans last November, telling WSJ. Magazine that he has contemplated moving on from football “more than anyone could ever imagine.”
“That’s the only thing I’ve never really been open about,” he told the publication at the time.
“The discomfort. The pain. The lingering injuries — the 10 surgeries I’ve had that I still feel every single surgery to this day.”
However, Travis further clarified his comments during a press conference last week, saying he doesn’t plan to retire “anytime soon.”
“I just have no reason to stop playing football. I love it,” he explained.
“We still have success. Come in with the right mindset, and I just love the challenge it gives me every single day to try to be at my best.”
Since the Chiefs recently beat the Miami Dolphins — with Swift, 34, in attendance — they are set to move forward in the playoffs ahead of Super Bowl LVIII, which will take place in Las Vegas on Feb. 11.
Travis and the “Cruel Summer” singer went public with their relationship in September 2023, though she shared that they were quietly a couple for “a significant amount of time” before that.
