Tiffany Haddish used to crash weddings for free food: ‘I was homeless and hungry’

Tiffany Haddish used to sneak into strangers’ weddings to eat the free food when she was homeless and trying to make it as a comedian.

“I’ve crashed weddings before, given a speech and didn’t know anybody there,” Haddish told People in an interview published Wednesday.

“That’s when I was homeless and hungry.”

The 43-year-old “Like a Boss” actress admitted she would go to a hotel in Los Angeles’ Westchester neighborhood that often hosted weddings so she could indulge in complimentary alcohol and bites.

“I would have two or three drinks and then I would grab the microphone and be like, ‘I just want to say that you are the most beautiful couple,’” she told the mag. “Everybody would be looking at me like, ‘Who is this black girl at our wedding?’”

But Haddish, who now reportedly has a net worth of $6 million, stressed the importance of staying grounded after eventually finding fame and fortune.

“I try my best not to hold onto too many emotions because I feel like when you hold onto all those emotions, they make you crazy and then you get delusional,” she said.

As for how she remains down to earth, Haddish explained: “Sleep is the key. And don’t be afraid to go out in nature. Take your shoes off and walk in some grass.”

The comedian, who was in foster care throughout her teen years, once struggled to make ends meet and was living out of her car for years before making it in Hollywood.

In 2019, she opened up about how frightened she was during that dark period in her life.

“I look at this picture and want to cry tears of joy for this girl,” she captioned a throwback photo of herself doing a stand-up comedy routine when she was younger. “I remember that night. She was homeless, hungry, scared, and hurt.”

She continued, “I promised her if she kept faith in God and herself, we will get to a place where we will be housed, overfed, less hurt and fear free.”

After working as a struggling comedian for years, Haddish eventually got her big break when she starred alongside Regina Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah in the 2017 comedy film “Girls Trip.”

The movie grossed over $140 million worldwide and catapulted Haddish into stardom.
