She’s in the “Spotlight” for all the wrong reasons.
Rising designer Sonique Saturday is defending Jennifer Hudson after the singer seemingly donated her gifted bag to a thrift shop.
TikTok user CrystelleC shared a video finding a bag that cheekily reads “You Fake Like This Birkin” at a thrift shop last week.
“I’m thrifting and I found this purse here…look what I found in the back of this purse,” she said before showing off Sonique’s business card and a “Thank You” letter addressed to Hudson.
“What an honor to gift you with one of my handbags. You’ve inspired me just as much as every black girl,” the note reads.
However, Sonique told TMZ she’s unbothered by the regifting, because the bag is from 2014 and Hudson’s team paid for it.
Saturday — who counts Tracee Ellis Ross and Kylie Jenner’s former best friend Jordyn Woods as fans — added that she’s not sure Jennifer “even received the bag,” telling her supporters, “don’t attack her, we want to be friends with her.”
The designer, who is famous for emblazoning bold statements on bags, wants to instead use this social media moment to “leverage more Black-owned businesses and female-owned businesses.”
But in the TikTok’s comments section, one person called Hudson “cold for donating it with the card,” as another quipped, “Not me thinking it was going to say Carrie Bradshaw,” referencing the neon Louis Vuitton purse Hudson’s character was famously given by Sarah Jessica Parker’s Bradshaw in the “Sex and the City” movie.
On Twitter, folks were up in arms about the great bag debate. One account questioned, “..why would Jennifer Hudson wear this bag? Hell, I wouldn’t wear this damn bag.
Another agreed: “and why exactly would jennifer hudson want a fake birkin bag?”
For those who would be willing to shell out for a faux Birkin, Saturday has a ton available to purchase on her website in an array of colors and sizes for $230-$550 — a fraction of what it’d cost for the real deal.
It remains to be seen if Hudson will pick up a new one herself.
