Matthew Perry claimed he only proposed to Molly Hurwitz while in a rehab facility because he was lonely and under the influence of drugs.
In his 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing,” the late “Friends” star shared that at the end of 2020, he was in an expensive Swiss rehab facility when he proposed to Hurwitz.
“I bought her a ring because I was desperate that she would leave me,” he wrote, never actually using Hurwitz’s name. “I didn’t want to be this injured and alone during Covid. I was high on 1,800 milligrams of hydrocodone when I asked her to marry me. I had even asked for her family’s blessing.”
“Then I’d proposed, high as a kite. And on one knee.”
“And she knew it, too. And she said yes,” he added.
Perry wrote that once they were back in Los Angeles — and he was newly sober — he was shocked to learn he was engaged and living with Hurwitz and her dogs.

“I was slowly beginning to realize that I was engaged, lived with a woman and two dogs,” he wrote. “Needless to say, I was not ready for any of this. You live with me? We live together?”
“We have kids’ names picked out, the whole nine yards, which is the name of a movie I once made? ‘You went down on one knee to propose, which really hurt your stomach, remember?'”
“I didn’t remember — needless to say, we broke up,” he curtly noted.
The “West Wing” alum was involved with Hurwitz, a literary agent, from 2018 to 2021.
After he proposed, Perry gushed that Hurwitz was the “greatest woman on the face of the planet.”
The pair called off their engagement in June 2021.
“Sometimes things just don’t work out and this is one of them,” he told People at the time. “I wish Molly the best.”
Following Perry’s death from an apparent drowning in his jacuzzi on October 28, Hurwitz shared a post on Instagram paying tribute to her ex-fiancé.
“He would love that the world is talking about how talented he was. And he really was very talented,” she wrote on Monday alongside a photo of the actor.
She went on to note that Perry was”complicated.”
“While I loved him deeper than I could comprehend, he was complicated, and he caused pain like I’d never known,” she added.
“No one in my adult life has had a more profound impact on me than Matthew Langford Perry. I have tremendous gratitude for that, for everything I learned from our relationship.”
Hurwitz also reminisced fondly about rewatching “Friends” with Perry ahead of the reunion special that premiered on HBO Max in 2021.
“‘F–k, I was so good!!! … See what I did there???’” she recalled Perry saying.
“We rewound and studied scenes,” she continued. “Our respect and appreciation of humor is something that connected us. Being with him as he rediscovered his brilliance was magical.”
“Matty, I feel relief that you are at peace. Sincerely, Moll-o-Rama(…fication),” she ended the post.
