John Stamos saw Rebecca Romijn as “the devil” during their divorce.
“I just hated her,” the “Full House” star admitted to People Wednesday. “I couldn’t believe how much I hated her, and it ruined my life.”
The former couple separated in 2004 after five years of marriage. They finalized their divorce in 2005.
The breakup “was shattering” to Stamos “for way too long,” he recalled.
“It went on [for] years and years,” he told the magazine, noting that he has since recognized the “part” he played in their split.
“You start thinking, it’s like, ‘Oh, she wasn’t the devil. Maybe I was as much to blame as her,'” the actor, 60, clarified despite how “humiliating” their divorce was.
“It was very much the opinion that she dumped me because her career was going great and mine wasn’t. I don’t blame her for it. It was just the perception that people took.
“Maybe they weren’t wrong,” he admitted. “She was doing great at that time and I wasn’t.”
Romijn’s rep has yet to respond to Pvnew’s request for comment.
While a now-sober Stamos “started to kind of drink a lot” after they called it quits, he has since “straightened up” and moved on with Caitlin McHugh.
Stamos and the 37-year-old tied the knot in February 2018, and the couple welcomed a son named Billy two months later.
Romijn, for her part, has been married to Jerry O’Connell since 2007. The actress, 50, is the mother of twin daughters Dolly and Charlie.
Although Stamos “didn’t write much about” Romijn in his “If You Would Have Told Me” memoir, out Oct. 24, the former model has previously addressed their “awful” divorce.
In May 2022, Romijn told “The Talk” viewers that their “terrible” and “very sad” breakup felt like “a failure.”
The “X-Men” star explained, “It’s a very hard decision to come to when you decide to end a marriage. It was heartbreaking. … I have a lot of fond memories of him. A lot of things about him that I miss.”
