Britney Spears is taking aim at her parents, Lynne and Jamie Spears, in her new book, “The Woman in Me.“
In an excerpt published by People Tuesday, the “Toxic” singer admits that she “would drink daiquiris” with her mom when she was “in eighth grade.”
After “The All-New Mickey Mouse Club” ended in 1995, the singer returned to her hometown of Kentwood, La., yearning for “normalcy.” But what Britney soon realized, she says, was that nothing about her family was “normal.”
“For fun, starting when I was in eighth grade, my mom and I would make the two-hour drive from Kentwood to Biloxi, Mississippi, and while we were there, we would drink daiquiris. We called our cocktails ‘toddies,'” she writes in her book.
“I loved that I was able to drink with my mom every now and then,” she further says, but is also quick to note that their drinking wasn’t so bad — not when it was compared to her dad’s alleged drinking habits.
“The way we drank was nothing like how my father did it,” she writes. “When he drank, he grew more depressed and shut down. We became happier, more alive and adventurous.”
After spending some time in Louisiana, Britney scored herself a record deal with Jive Records at the age of 15 and got back to work.
Not only did she find success with several record-smashing albums, but she starred in the 2002 movie “Crossroads” and has become one of the biggest, most famous stars in the world.
Not everything has been glamorous, though. After her divorce from Kevin Federline and two involuntary psychiatric holds, Britney’s dad, 71, went to court and requested to become his daughter’s legal guardian. That conservatorship lasted for 13 years, and Britney says it turned her into “a robot.”
“The conservatorship stripped me of my womanhood, made me into a child,” she says in her book. “I became more of an entity than a person onstage. I had always felt music in my bones and my blood; they stole that from me.”
It wasn’t until Britney testified against her “abusive” conservatorship in 2021 that a Los Angeles judge ended the arrangement.
Jamie repeatedly denied any wrongdoing during his time as Britney’s conservator, but the father-daughter duo have remained estranged ever since the court’s ruling.
Britney and Lynne also haven’t always had the best relationship — they previously went years without speaking — but they had a brief reunion in May.
“The Woman in Me” hits shelves on Oct. 24.
