Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are close friends — but are they also half-brothers?
After McConaughey told Kelly Ripa about his mom Kay’s possible hookup with Harrelson’s dad, Charles, the “Live” host pushed him to take a DNA test.
“This is what we’re on the precipice of now,” McConaughey admitted in Wednesday’s episode of Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast. “It’s a little easier for Woody because what’s the skin in it for him?”
McConaughey, 53, noted that his results would be “a little harder” to look at than Harrelson’s.
“He’s asking me to take a chance my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing it,” he explained. “I’ve got a little more skin in the game.”
The “True Detective” co-stars discovered while on vacation in Greece that their parents had crossed paths — possibly sexually — in the past.
“My mom said, ‘Woody, I knew your dad,'” Matthew recalled. “Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew.’ It was a loaded k-n-e-w.”
After “unpack[ing]” her confession and doing “some math,” the “Interstellar” star “found out that [Woody’s] dad was on furlough at the same time [Matthew’s] mom and dad were on their second divorce.”
Matthew added, “Then there are possible receipts of a place in West Texas where they might have been a gathering or meeting or a ‘knew’ moment.”
The “Dallas Buyers Club” star pointed out his and Woody’s physical similarities, saying, “You see pictures of us, and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me, and his family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him.”
Matthew later told listeners that his mother, who twice divorced and thrice married James McConaughey before his 2020 death, met Woody’s dad while on an “extended vacation.”
“Not until later was I told that [trip] was a divorce and not until a few years ago was I told that’s when she met and knew Woody’s dad,” he recalled.
In a November 2020 “Red Table Talk” interview, Kay said she gave birth to Matthew after her second divorce and third marriage.
Ripa, who listened to the actor’s theory with an open mind, volunteered to distribute “any and all DNA tests” in the future.
“We could have potentially uncovered a mystery here,” the “Live” host, 52, said. said. “I’m getting AncestryDNA on the phone. We’re gonna figure out who’s related to whom. Wouldn’t that be amazing?”
Ripa joked that her podcast episode, titled “Who’s Your Daddy,” deserves a Peabody Award.
