She’s telling the story of her life.
Maya Henry, the ex-fiancée of One Direction singer Liam Payne, revealed in a new interview that she had a traumatic medical abortion a few years back, seemingly when she was still dating the heartthrob.
The former model made the revelation while promoting her new book, “Looking Forward,” which she says is fictional but “definitely inspired” by real-life events from her own life.
At one point in the novel – which hit bookshelves Wednesday – main character Mallory suffers severe complications after undergoing an abortion with her charming, British pop star boyfriend, Oliver.

“What I went through in real life is very similar to what Mallory went through in the book,” Henry, 23, told People. “I definitely did have some complications [following my abortion], and I did have to go to the hospital alone.”
Henry did not reveal an exact timeframe for when she had her real-life abortion to the outlet. She also did not disclose who impregnated her at the time.
A rep for Payne did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
According to an early preview of the book obtained by People, main character Mallory’s abortion in the tome occurred while she was dating Oliver.
Just like Payne – who became a sensation when One Direction was formed on “The X Factor” in 2010 – the fictional musician rose to fame after being paired with a group on a TV show.
In “Looking Forward,” Mallory’s famous beau gives her an ultimatum: either have the baby as a single woman, or stay with him and abort the pregnancy.
Henry told People she found herself in the same situation in real life – and regretted terminating her baby.
“If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have done it. But then also, if I were to have made a different decision, then I would’ve lost the person that I loved,” she reflected. “There were definitely difficult conversations about it. But looking back now, things happen for a reason.”
While first announcing “Looking Forward” via social media in February, Henry told fans that she journaled about her experiences “throughout the pandemic” and that her “journal evolved into a novel.”
She was first linked to Payne, now 30, in 2018. He asked for her hand in marriage in 2020 — the year the coronavirus pandemic started — and they stayed together until 2022 after breaking up briefly in 2021.
Payne spoke briefly about his relationship with Henry during a 2021 interview on the “Diary of a CEO” podcast, where he admitted he had “not been very good at relationships.”
Payne briefly moved on with Aliana Mawla following his split from Henry and has been dating Kate Cassidy since October 2022.

For her part, Henry did not disclose to People whether she is currently in a relationship. However, she told the outlet that Payne “regularly reaches out” to her as they’re now on good terms.
