It all comes down to the Oscars.
Every year, stars save their best red carpet looks for the Academy Awards — and that certainly seemed to be true at the 2024 ceremony, hosted Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Black gowns were a major trend of the night, with Vanessa Hudgens, Danielle Brooks, Issa Rae and Eva Longoria among the many celebrities who leaned into the dark side on the step-and-repeat. Others, including Emma Stone, Hailee Steinfeld and Lupita Nyong’o, took the polar-opposite approach by embracing pastel shades.

Of course, it’s never an Oscars carpet without a hefty helping of sparkle — and Zendaya, Anya Taylor-Joy and Gabrielle Union all delivered in that department.
Below, our best-dressed picks from Sunday’s show.
Lupita Nyong’o
It simply doesn’t get better than this beaded and feathered Armani Privé gown in the same shade of icy blue as Nyong’o’s fairytale-worthy Prada dress from the 2014 Oscars, where she took home the best supporting actress award for her work in “12 Years a Slave.”
While this gown was originally made for Nyong’o in 2020, we’re thrilled it finally got its moment to shine; De Beers jewelry finished off the dreamy look.
Gabrielle Union
Bling it on! Union boldly paired an all-over embellished strapless minidress from Carolina Herrera with a matching crystal-encrusted column skirt from the same collection to create a peplum effect.
As if that wasn’t enough shine, she also added an enormous aquamarine necklace from Tiffany & Co.
Zendaya
From the deserts of Arrakis to the palm trees of Beverly Hills! Fresh off her “Dune: Part Two” press tour filled with futuristic fashion moments, Zendaya instead opted for old-school glamour for the Academy Awards with this shimmering rose-hued Armani Privé.
Gigantic pink morganite earrings from Bulgari were the perfect finishing touch.

Anya Taylor-Joy
Zendaya’s “Dune” co-star looked divine in this Dior Haute Couture bustier gown covered with cascading embroidered petals — a reimagining of the fashion house’s famed Venus dress. (Natalie Portman wore a re-creation of the corresponding Dior Junon dress, which features similar scale-like details, at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.)
Tiffany & Co. diamonds, including a dazzling necklace set with an 8-carat marquise diamond, were the icing on the proverbial cake.
Emma Stone
Bella Baxter would certainly approve of the dramatic mint-colored Louis Vuitton dress Stone selected for the Oscars; its pannier-like peplum and “sorbet” shade, per stylist Petra Flannery, were nods to the palette and Victorian-era costumes in “Poor Things.”
A 30-carat yellow diamond necklace from Louis Vuitton High Jewelry topped off the actress’ gorgeous jacquard gown.
Lily Gladstone
The “Killers of the Flower Moon” star — who’s the first Native American actress to be nominated for best actress — celebrated Indigenous craftsmanship with her Oscars dress, made by Gucci in collaboration with Mohawk, Cree and Comanche artist Joe Big Mountain of Ironhorse Quillwork.
The deep blue velvet design featured a matching cape with floral quillwork motifs, which were also echoed in Gladstone’s earrings. Bulgari provided her colorful jewels.
America Ferrera
Margot Robbie opted for black on Oscars night, so thank goodness for her co-star’s decision to deliver one final blast of Barbie pink to close out awards season.
This pink metal mesh Atelier Versace column gown fit Ferrera like a glove, and we loved the matching rubellite-studded Pomellato choker and cocktail ring she paired with her dress.
Colman Domingo
No man’s dressed better this awards season than “Rustin” nominee Domingo, who selected a double-breasted Louis Vuitton tuxedo with crystal buttons and flared trousers for the Oscars.
He accessorized with Louis Vuitton cowboy boots, an Omega watch, David Yurman jewelry — including a brilliant brooch pinned on his bow tie — and a pinky ring that once belonged to Bayard Rustin himself.
“I wanted to just shine like a diamond,” Domingo told Laverne Cox on the red carpet. Mission accomplished.

Kirsten Dunst
Dunst’s sleek white square-neck Gucci gown stood out for its simplicity in all the right ways, and her red lip provided the perfect pop of color.
Fred Leighton antique cushion-cut diamond drop earrings and a single light brown oval diamond ring were the only accessories needed to make this sleek look sing.
Greta Lee
The stylish “Past Lives” nominee looked effortlessly elegant in this black-and-white Loewe look, her best of the whole season.
She teamed her gown with Tiffany & Co. jewels, including paper clip-like diamond earrings, an Art Deco-style bracelet and a 6-carat green tourmaline ring.
