Joel Madden got candid about the secret to his nearly 13-year marriage with Nicole Richie.
“We go to therapy. Lots of therapy,” the Good Charlotte rocker revealed on “The Drew Barrymore Show” Wednesday.
“I know each one of you together and individually — you do the work,” Barrymore replied.
“I don’t think we pretend to be perfect either,” Madden continued. “I think we’re all human.”
The hitmaker also gushed about his wife, who he said was raised “with a lot of integrity and a lot of class” by her parents, Lionel Richie and Brenda Harvey-Richie.
“The more you know her, the more you love her,” he added. “It takes time to get to know her. But she’s just classy.”
In fact, Madden, 44, said the fashion designer, 42, has been passed on her positive attributes to their two children — daughter Harlow, 15, and son Sparrow, 14 — who have been “easy” to raise.
‘We got lucky with our kids. They’re easy,” he said. “I always tell my kids, you make it so easy to be a dad. They’re just good kids. They really are. They’re great. And I think they’re like their mom.”
Back in April 2017, Nicole revealed her approach to raising her kids in the spotlight.
“It’s extremely important to us for our kids to be kids, to have a full-blown childhood,” she told Refinery29.
The “Simple Life” alum added that it was important for her to develop “a strong closeness and trust” with their kids, including taking advantage of family outings to the mall and movies.
“What we both do is just try and pour our interest into what the kids are interested in,” she said.
Madden and Nicole tied the knot in December 2010 after four years of dating.
The longtime couple was recently spotted on a double date with Joel’s twin brother, Benji Madden, and his wife, Cameron Diaz.
The foursome attended the Veeps All Access launch party in Los Angeles in early October.
