Whoopi Goldberg awkwardly put Alyssa Farah Griffin on the spot during Thursday’s episode of “The View.”
After the EGOT winner spoke at length during the show’s “Hot Topics” segment, she randomly stopped mid-sentence to ask her co-host, “Are you pregnant?”
Griffin, 34, leaned back from the table in surprise and exclaimed, “No! Oh, my God.”
She then laughed nervously, adding, “You can’t say that when my mother-in-law is here, who has been dying for me to get pregnant.
“Why?” the political strategist, who has been married to Justin Griffin since 2021, went on to ask. “Do I look pregnant? Please tell me it’s not my tummy.”
Goldberg, 67, doubled down on her initial assumption, telling Alyssa that she did “look” like she was expecting a baby.
“I just got a vibe,” she said. “I’m so sorry. Forgive me. I just … you have … I see a glow.”
Griffin clarified, “I’m very open to being pregnant soon. I am not blessed to be pregnant yet, but we are thinking about it. We’re working on it. I’m pretty sure [I’m not].”
Joy Behar questioned Goldberg’s faux pas immediately, while Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin watched the uncomfortable exchange play out before chiming in.
“We like babies at ‘The View,'” Hostin, 54, eventually said. “Because we can have baby showers.”
Haines, 45, joked that Griffin’s “first boy will be named Whoopi,” but Goldberg urged Griffin not to “do that to the baby.”
As the tense back-and-forth circulated on Twitter Thursday, social media users slammed Goldberg’s “inappropriate” query.
“For reasons obvious and not-so-obvious, Whoopi should have kept her suspicion to herself and mentioned it to Alyssa Farah Griffin only in private,” one wrote.
Another added, “WTH……Now why would Whoopi embarrass Alyssa like that? Some things shouldn’t be blurred out on live TV.”
However, others told haters to “relax” and encouraged Griffin to take a pregnancy test because Goldberg “might be onto something.”
Griffin permanently joined the show’s 26th season in 2022 to replace Meghan McCain following many guest appearances.
She and Justin, 35, got engaged in 2020. The couple tied the knot in November of the following year.
