Stranger Things have happened — or have they?
Both Ethan Hawke and his daughter, Maya Hawke, did not have a problem with him directing her sex scenes in “Wildcat.”
The actor told PvNew in a cover story published Tuesday that they “were so comfortable with it,” adding, “I couldn’t care less.
“We needed to take care of Rafael [Casal] and Cooper [Hoffman],” Ethan, 52, continued, referencing the men acting alongside his 25-year-old daughter. “I think it was weird for them.”
Maya agreed, explaining, “We made sure to have an intimacy coordinator on set for them. So that they felt safe and comfortable and not like they were being spied on…”
“…by some creepy dad,” Ethan chimed in.
The actress plays novelist Flannery O’Connor in the movie, which features two sex scenes.
In the film, which came out Sept. 1, Maya also portrays characters from O’Connor’s stories, including a woman from “Good Country People” getting hot and heavy with a Bible salesman in a hayloft and the “Parker’s Back” protagonist hooking up with a man in a truck.
While Maya initially referred to her father by his first name on set, she revealed she eventually went back to calling him “Dad.”
“I realized it was actually more distracting to people,” the “Stranger Things” star explained. “They’d be like, ‘Why are you doing that?’”
Maya noted that despite having “moments of insecurity” about starring in a movie directed by her parent, she ultimately shrugged that off.
“The internet doesn’t have a lot of nuances,” she told the outlet of nepo baby backlash. “My dad has been a massive teacher for me, and we want to work together. We like being with each other.”
As for Ethan, he said, “If someone wants to criticize us for working together, that’s totally fair. You have to let people have their opinion. You just have to try to do a good job when you’re onstage.”
The duo have worked together before on “The Good Lord Bird,” released in 2020.
Ethan shares Maya with his ex-wife Uma Thurman, as well as a 21-year-old son named Levon. The former couple split in 2005.
Having divorced parents made “every weekend … special,” Maya told As If magazine in July 2022.
“There’s a high value placed on time spent together,” she said. “You no longer have a feeling of infinite time; you quickly realize it’s borrowed time.”
She often speaks candidly about growing up with Ethan and Thurman, 53, as parents — even recently detailing the time she lied about going to therapy and lost her virginity instead.
