Beloved “Margaritaville” singer Jimmy Buffett died of cancer, according to a new report.
After the musician was diagnosed with skin cancer four years ago, the disease progressed to lymphoma.
This was the 76-year-old’s cause of death, according to TMZ.
“He lived his life in the sun, literally and figuratively,” a source told the outlet Friday, noting that Buffett had been on hospice since Monday.
Paul McCartney reportedly visited the Grammy nominee at his home within the last week to sing to him.
News broke of Buffett’s death early Friday morning in a statement posted to his social media accounts.
“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1 surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” the upload read, alongside a smiling snap of the songwriter.
“He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many,” the statement concluded.
Buffett is survived by his wife, Jane Slagsvol, as well as daughter Savannah, daughter Sarah and son Cameron.
Many celebrities have honored the businessman with touching social media tributes.
“So goodbye Jimmy,” Kenny Chesney captioned an Instagram video Friday.
“Thanks for your friendship and the songs I will carry in my heart forever. Sail On Sailor.”
Elton John, for his part, called Buffett a “unique and treasured entertainer,” adding, “This is the saddest of news. A lovely man gone way too soon.”
