Surprise!
Jenna Bush Hager recalled the awkward moment her parents invited her ex and new boyfriend to her and twin sister Barbara Bush’s 16th birthday breakfast.
During Tuesday’s episode of “Today with Hoda & Jenna,” the co-host — whose parents are former US President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush — was asked by Hoda Kotb if she liked surprises.
“I had a surprise party for my 16th birthday, me and Barbara,” Bush Hager, 41, recalled, according to Decider.
“My parents were very creative birthday people which was fun but then it gets kind of awkward because it’s like [they have] the old boyfriend sitting next to the new boyfriend.”
The “Sisters First” author explained that she walked into the unexpected pancake breakfast after she was told to wake up early for her license test.
“We were going to kiss my dad goodbye for school, my mom was like, ‘Go in and tell dad goodbye,’” Bush Hager continued. “And we walked in and all of our friends were sitting there.”
The former first daughter’s story left Kotb speechless as she asked in disbelief, “They invited both boyfriends?”
“Your parents are wild,” the co-host added.
Back in May, the TV personality revealed an embarrassing comment she received from her mom the night before she was set to marry Henry Hager in 2008.
“My sister and I spent the night the night before [my husband and I] got married, and my mom came in [singing], ‘You’re getting married! Let’s go change the sheets!’” Bush Hager recalled.
“And Barbara goes, ‘Eww gross, mom! This isn’t ‘The Other Boleyn Girl!’” she said, referencing the 2008 movie in which two sisters compete for King Henry VIII’s attention.
Bush Hager further teased that Laura dropped another cringey comment but she refused to elaborate.
The next day, the news personality tied the knot to her husband after giving him a “manipulative ultimatum” to convince him to propose to her.
The couple share three kids: daughters Mila, 10, and Poppy, 8, and son Hal, 4.
