Martin Short doubled down on denying rumors that he and Meryl Streep are dating.
“We’re not a couple. We are just very close friends,” the “Saturday Night Live” alum said on Sunday’s episode of Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast.
Short’s clarification came after the “Real Time” host referred to the “only Murders in the Building” co-stars as a “power couple.”
Accepting Martin’s denial, Maher joked that he should consider dating Streep anyway.
“There’s nothing more powerful in Hollywood than a power couple,” he quipped. “It worked for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. It worked for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.”
Short, 73, and Streep, 74, first sparked romance speculation earlier this month when they were spotted looking friendly while seated together at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards.
“Sitting with the knowledge that Meryl Streep and Martin Short might be in love but I have no proof,” one viewer tweeted at the time.
“Meryl Streep & Martin Short allegedly dating is now my Roman Empire,” a second person wrote online.
“Are we not gonna talk about Meryl Streep and Martin Short sitting together,” a third asked.
However, Short’s spokesperson told People at the time that the actors “are just very good friends, nothing more.”
Pvnew exclusively reported last October that the “Devil Wears Prada” star and her husband, Don Gummer, secretly separated six years ago after four decades of marriage.
While the former couple had not been seen together since 2018, Streep had continued to wear her wedding ring until the news of their split made headlines.
The “Mamma Mia!” star and Gummer, 77, share four children: singer Henry Wolfe, 44, and actresses Mamie Gummer, 40, Grace Gummer, 37, and Louisa Jacobson, 32.
Short was married to Nancy Dolman from 1980 until she died in 2010 at the age of 58 after battling ovarian cancer.
The pair had three kids: Katherine Elizabeth Short, 40, Oliver Patrick Short, 37, and Henry Short, 34.
