Sofia Richie and Elliot Grainge completely caught their parents off guard with their pregnancy announcement.
While revealing her pregnancy news to Vogue during an interview published Thursday, the expecting mom detailed how she and Grainge playfully told their parents the exciting news.
“We went to Elliot’s parents, who live about five minutes away from us, and I think I had a box — I want to say it was a Hermès box or some sort of box — and I told everyone that I had bought them a gift from Milan Fashion Week,” she recalled.
“Everyone was like, ‘Ooooh Hermes!’ But then they opened it and it had all three of the pregnancy tests [in it]. That’s how we told all of our parents.”
“Watching their reaction go from like, ‘I’m about to get an expensive present’ to like ‘I’m about to get a grandchild’ was really sweet,” Richie added.
During her chat with Vogue, the 25-year-old model and daughter of musician Lionel Richie also revealed she’s expecting a girl, which was a “shock.”
“My dream in life is to have a daughter [though], and Elliot is really excited for a girl, too,” she /confirm/ied.
Richie also explained why she chose to wait several months to announce her baby news to the public.
“Pregnancy is really scary and you want to protect that space,” she reasoned.
“I didn’t realize there are so many milestones you have to hit and so many tests you have to take.”
“For me, it was really important to protect our mental health and our space as a couple.”
She continued, “There was an anxiety for me about hitting certain milestones [when it came to the pregnancy], and once I passed that 21-week mark, I felt like I was in the safe zone.”
She did not confirm her due date, explaining, “She’s growing pretty fast, so [the due date] is a bit up in the air.”
Richie and Grainge tied the knot in April 2023 during a lavish wedding in France that was hosted at one of the most exclusive properties in the world, The Hotel du Cap Eden Roc.
Prior to that, the pair got engaged in 2022 after about one year of dating.
They were friends their entire lives, but once things turned romantic, Richie knew she had found her forever person.
“When we started being romantic, he just gave me a different feeling,” she raved to Who What Wear in August 2023.
“It was a feeling of safety. It was the feeling of really being appreciated.”
“I knew when we started dating that he was my husband.”
