The infamous Razzie Awards are back, (dis)honoring the year’s worst in film.
While Sunday’s Academy Awards will celebrate Christopher Nolan’s landmark drama “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig’s $1.4 billion blockbuster “Barbie,” the 44th annual Razzies are focusing on lesser-seen fare, like the fourth “Expendables” movie and “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” a horror adaptation that won five undesired awards.
“Blood and Honey” practically swept the Razzies, winning worst picture, director and screenplay (Rhys Frake-Waterfield), screen couple (Pooh and Piglet) and remake/rip-off/sequel. Sylvester Stallone and Megan Fox won the supporting actor categories for “Expend4bles,” and Fox took home the lead actress prize for “Johnny & Clyde.” Jon Voight won worst actor for “Mercy.”
The Razzies also awarded Fran Drescher with the “Redeemer Award,” recognizing the 1998 Razzie nominee for “The Beautician and the Beast” for — aww! — “her brilliant shepherding ofthe actors’ guild through a prolonged 2023 strike with a successful conclusion.”
The satirical anti-awards body, founded in 1981 by John Wilson and Mo Murphy, caught backlash last year for nominating the 12-year-old “Firestarter” star Ryan Kiera Armstrong for worst actress. After an online uproar, the Razzies removed Armstrong from the ballot and gave itself the award for worst actress, for “Their 43rd Worst Actress Nominations Blunder.” Last year’s winners also included Tom Hanks, Jared Leto, Machine Gun Kelly and Andrew Dominik.
This year’s Razzie winners were announced by the Mean Gays (Aaron Goldenberg and Jake Jonez), who delivered a virtual ceremony one day before the 96th Academy Awards. The comedy duo formed a new, strategic partnership with the Razzies brokered by Evan Mirzai and his production banner House of M.
