Robert De Niro had the support of some of his closest Hollywood friends while mourning the loss of his grandson Leandro De Niro Rodriguez.
Christopher Walken, Michael Imperioli and Harvey Keitel attended Leandro’s wake on Friday — five days after the 19-year-old died from an apparent fentanyl overdose.
The stars were photographed arriving separately at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel on the Upper East Side of New York City, where Judy Garland, Heath Ledger, John Lennon and other legendary entertainers’ funerals were also held.
Walken, who first worked with De Niro on 1978’s “The Deer Hunter,” wore a gray suit and black tie while Keitel and his wife, Daphna Kastner, matched in all-black looks.
Similarly, Imperioli dressed in black for the solemn memorial.
Robert, who tried to shield his face using a newspaper, was joined by his girlfriend, Tiffany Chen, and their 3-month-old daughter, Gia.
The “about My Father” actor arrived wearing a mask and baseball hat but seemingly took off the accessories for the service, during which he opted for a simple black suit and tan collared shirt.
Robert, 79, looked solemn leaving the wake before he and his celebrity friends walked across street to eat dinner at Italian restaurant Sistina.
Leandro — who was the son of Robert’s eldest child, Drena — was found dead on July 2, reportedly sitting beside “a plate” containing a “white powdery substance.”
Soon after, Drena, 51, announced on Instagram that her only child had died.
“My beautiful sweet angel. I have loved you beyond words or description from the moment I felt you in my belly,” the filmmaker wrote in a heartbreaking post.
“You have been my joy my heart and all that was ever pure and real in my life,” she continued. “I wish I was with you right now. I wish I was with you. I don’t know how to live without you.”
Leandro’s father, sculptor Carlos “Mare139” Rodriguez, also mourned the loss of his son, saying, “Words aren’t enough to express the joy he gave us or the loss we now endure.”
Drena later alleged that “someone sold [Leandro] fentanyl laced pills that they knew were laced yet still sold them to him.”
“For all these people still f–king around selling and buying this s–t, my son is gone forever,” she wrote on Instagram.
Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use of pain relief and anesthetic,” according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The drug is approximately 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin as an analgesic.
Following the news, Robert said he was “deeply distressed” by the death of his “beloved grandson” in a statement to Pvnew.
“We’re greatly appreciative of the condolences from everyone. We ask that we please be given privacy to grieve our loss of Leo,” he added.
The “Goodfellas” star adopted Drena in 1976 when he married her mother, Diahnne Abbott, whom he divorced 12 years later. However, he and Drena still seem to have a good relationship.
