Gypsy Rose Blanchard Released From Prison After Serving 8 Years for Mother’s Murder

Gypsy Rose Blanchard was released from prison on parole Thursday morning after serving eight years for the 2015 murder of her mother, the Associated Press reported.

Blanchard was originally sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder of her mother, Dee Dee, who she alleged abused her by deliberately making her sick. In Blanchard’s trial, she claimed that her mother suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy and had fabricated that Blanchard had illnesses including leukemia, asthma and muscular dystrophy.

Blanchard and her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, conspired to murder Dee Dee, with Godejohn stabbing and killing her in her home. He was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Blanchard, now 32, garnered much media attention at the time of her trial and became the subject of the Hulu series “The Act,” starring Joey King, as well as a HBO documentary titled “Mommy Dead and Dearest.” Lifetime will premiere on Jan. 5 “The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard,” featuring an exclusive interview with her from prison.

In a new interview with People, Blanchard said she regrets conspiring to kill her mother.

“Nobody will ever hear me say I’m glad she’s dead or I’m proud of what I did,” she said. “I regret it every single day.”

Blanchard added, “She didn’t deserve that. She was a sick woman and unfortunately I wasn’t educated enough to see that. She deserved to be where I am, sitting in prison doing time for criminal behavior.”

She told People that she hopes others can learn from her situation. “I want to make sure that people in abusive relationships do not resort to murder,” she said. “It may seem like every avenue is closed off but there is always another way. Do anything, but don’t take this course of action.”
