Derek Hough revealed his wife, Hayley Erbert, underwent emergency brain surgery.
The “Dancing with the Stars” pro-turned-judge — who is in the midst of the couple’s Symphony of Dance tour — told his Instagram followers Thursday morning that Erbert “became disoriented and was taken to the hospital” at the end of their show in Washington, D.C., Wednesday night.
“She was diagnosed with a cranial hematoma from a burst blood vessel and required an emergency craniectomy,” he explained.
According to the Mayo Clinic, an intracranial hematoma is a collection of blood within the brain tissue or underneath the skull, which then presses on the brain.
It’s usually caused by a blood vessel in the brain that bursts, typically as a result of some sort of head trauma.
Per the University of Rochester Medical Medical Center, a craniectomy is a neurosurgical procedure that involves removing a portion of the skull in order to relieve pressure on the brain.
Hough, 38, did not say whether Erbert, 29, had recently fallen or gotten hit; however, the pair “got into a pretty scary car accident in the mountains” last December.
At the time, Erbert said she and Hough were “both okay” following the crash and that she “only walked away a little banged up” with “a swollen face and four stitches above [her] eyebrow.”
She went on to share photos of her injured face and added, “I am blown away and grateful for my body’s ability to heal so quickly. ♥️ I’m manifesting that 2023 is a year of health and strength. No more injuries
