Jennette McCurdy revealed she once had a pregnancy scare while trying to combat her battle with adult acne.
The “iCarly” alum detailed the experience in Tuesday’s episode of her “Hard Feelings” podcast while explaining that she needed to take several blood tests to get a prescription for Accutane, a powerful acne prevention drug.
However, the drug causes birth defects in up to 35 percent of infants exposed to it during pregnancy, according to the National Institute of Health, so doctors recommend monthly pregnancy tests to McCurdy.
The former Nickelodeon star shared that she was on Accutane for a “couple months” a “few years ago” and even had to “sign a contract saying that ‘You will not get pregnant. Under no circumstances will you get pregnant.'”
She even recalled taking “two forms of contraception” at the time, but things took a turn when she took her blood test on her third month of taking the drug.
The receptionist called her and urged her to come in to see her dermatologist, even though McCurdy, now 31, tried to cancel going to her “depressing” doctor’s office.
“I go, ‘I can’t make it. Like, can I just come in next week?’ And she goes, ‘No, because we got the results of your bloodwork, and there’s a pregnancy,'” she recalled.
The former child star was immediately “shocked” and felt like she “got the wind knocked out” of her.
“My head was spinning. I was so dizzy. I involuntarily sat on the edge of my bed,” she continued.
“My body just fell on the edge of my bed, and I was like, ‘What, what?’ I just felt cotton-mouthed — even now repeating it, my heart is pounding. It was so terrifying.”
McCurdy remembered “recounting recent sexual activities” and “replaying everything” wondering, “How did this happen?” while en route to her dermatologist’s office.
“I’m in the back seat of an Uber, dizzy the entire way, feeling like I’m gonna pass out or throw up or both, like awful, awful, terrible,” she said.
once McCurdy got to the office, she instantly became confused when her doctor asked her if there was “a chance you could be pregnant” since she was previously told “there was a pregnancy.”
“What do you mean ‘Is there a chance?’ It sounds like you know there’s not just a chance, but there’s a certainty. Like, you called me here, you said I was pregnant, and she’s like, ‘Well, sometimes there can be false pregnancies that come up on these because of your hormonal levels,'” she remembered.
McCurdy then felt both “terrified” and a “little flicker of hope” while she did another blood test that ultimately revealed it was a false positive.
“I am not pregnant, and it is fine, but that experience was so terrifying that I was like, ‘I gotta get off this s–t. Like, this is not for me,'” she added.
The “Sam & Cat” alum –– who famously had a complicated relationship with her late mom –– has previously talked about motherhood and said that she “cannot imagine a world in which someday I want kids,” but she is also “open” to freezing her eggs.
“I do not feel in any way, shape, or form like I want kids,” she shared on her podcast earlier this month.
