This star didn’t flip over the Cannes dress code.
Jennifer Lawrence made headlines for ditching her heels on the 2023 Cannes Film Festival red carpet last month, but it turns out, the only statement she was making was that her shoes didn’t fit.
The “Silver Linings Playbook” actress, 32, set the record straight while in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, admitting that she had “no clue” about the “whole controversy with people wearing flats” at the glitzy film festival.
“I would really like to straighten this out,” Lawrence said when Turner mentioned her red carpet flip-flop moment.
“I was not making a political statement, not that I wouldn’t,” the “Hunger Games” star said, adding she “had no idea” that other stars had worn flats or “walked down the red carpet barefoot” in protest of the famously strict Cannes dress code.
“My shoes were a size too big,” Lawrence explained. “And I wore heels going up, but then I forgot to take a picture with my production team, Excellent Cadaver. So, we had to take an Excellent Cadaver picture, and I knew I would eat s—t if I went down in the shoes that were a size too big.”
The “X-Men” star decided to swap out her red heels — which she paired with a coordinating Dior Haute Couture ballgown — and was surprised at the reaction.
“I put on the flip-flops, and then everybody’s like, ‘What a statement! Wow!'” she said, continuing, “I’m all for making a statement. I just would want it to be on purpose.”
While Lawrence’s dress code-breaking footwear moment might have been an accident, Kristen Stewart purposely removed her heels in 2018 and walked the red carpet barefoot to protest the Cannes Film Festival’s alleged no-flats rule.
Maybe next year Lawrence will stick with her flats.
