Turns out she wasn’t “Happier Than Ever.”
Billie Eilish admitted that her blond era was a bit of a flop in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times’ Envelope magazine, sharing that the platinum look “did not go how I wanted it to go.”
When the “Ocean Eyes” singer, 21, first hit the scene she was known for her blue hair, eventually experimenting with shades from purple to black and everything in between.
But in March 2021, she traded green locks for a platinum blond dye job, shocking fans with the drastic transformation from her usual rainbow-hued hair.
“At first it was fun. I was really excited for the blond era — like, Blond Billie is gonna be so cool,” she told the publication. “But it did not go how I wanted it to go.”
“I completely had no idea who I was,” Eilish admitted. “I came up with this whole aesthetic, and I just got swallowed up into it.”
The star admitted that the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 had her feeling low after a blockbuster year in her life and she was looking to change things around by shaking up her look.
“2019, that period of my life when I dyed my hair green, I was completely unstoppable,” she said. “I felt like I was on the moon. And I remember at the time being like, I’m finally happy. I’d never been happy before, and I just wanted to stay happy.”
While the “Bad Guy” singer’s blond locks definitely worked with her Marilyn Monroe-esque Met Gala 2021 look, she didn’t keep the look for long, dying her hair red for a week before going brown that December.
However, the chocolate look didn’t take, either. “I look back at that and I’m like, ‘Who is this brunette? A brunette! That wasn’t me,” she said.
Eilish went back to black, and has since rocked a variety of colorful roots in the process, but she did briefly return to blond for the “What Was I Made For” video on the “Barbie” soundtrack.
This isn’t the first time she’s spoken out about her platinum locks; in 2022, she told Highsnobiety that she “didn’t feel sexy for one second” while rocking blond hair.
As for the pop star’s latest look, it couldn’t be any further from a blond Barbie; she’s been rocking a swirly rainbow-colored circle on top of her head that fans have compared to a weather map.
