Republican presidential candidate Senator Tim Scott slammed Sunny Hostin’s previous comments about “systemic racism” as “dangerous” and “offensive.”
During Monday’s episode of “The View,” Scott made an appearance when Hostin, 54, honed in on him.
“You were the first Black senator elected in the South since the reconstruction,” she told him. “That would be about, I think, 114 years. Yet you say that your life just disproves left, leftist lies.
“And my question to you is, I’m the exception, right? You’re the exception. Maybe even Miss Whoopi Goldberg is the exception. But we are not the rule. And so when it comes to racial inequality, it persists.”
Hostin then listed the “five core aspects of life in the U.S.: Economics, education, health care, criminal justice and housing,” adding that “at nearly every turn, these achievements were fought, threatened and erased, most often by white violence.”
She then added, “You have indicated that you don’t believe in systemic racism. What is your definition of systemic racism?”
Instead of answering the question directly, the South Carolina politician, 57, replied, “Let me answer the question this way. One of the things I think about and one of the reasons why I’m on the show is because of the comments that were made, frankly, on this show, that the only way for a young African-American kid to be successful in this country is to be the exception and not the rule.”
“That is a dangerous, offensive, disgusting message to send to our young people today that the only way to succeed is by being the exception,” he added. “I will tell you that if my life is the exception, I can’t imagine I can’t….
When Hostin noted that it’s been over a century since there was a Black senator, Scott retorted missing the point.
“But it’s not actually, so the fact of the matter is we’ve had an African-American president, African-American vice president.
“We’ve had two African-Americans to be secretaries of state. In my home city, the police chief is an African-American who’s now running for mayor.
“The head of the highway patrol for South Carolina is an African-American,” he replied.
Co-host Ana Navarro, who is a staunch Republican, also laid into Scott.
“I live in Florida and I’m sick of manufactured culture wars and the spread of hatred and division for the purposes of politics and I hope you take Ron DeSantis on because what he is doing is hypocritical, it’s not conservative and it’s sickening,” she said.
Florida Governor and Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis has been feuding with Disney for the last year after he pushed through the state’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” law, which bans teachers from discussing sexual orientation and gender for all public school students.
When the former Representative tried to defend DeSantis’ war against Disney, he was booed by the audience, causing moderator Whoopi Goldberg to speak up.
“Do not boo,” she exclaimed. “This is ‘The View,’ we don’t have to believe everything people say but you cannot boo people here, please.”
