This celebrity is one protective mom.
Brooke Shields opened up about her new documentary and her 17-year-old daughter, Grier Henchy’s, blossoming modeling career on “Live with Kelly and Mark” yesterday, revealing that she was actually against the decision at first.
“The rules have changed since I was [a model],” the “Pretty Baby” actress, 58, told Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on the episode.
Shields, who said Henchy was doing “little things here and there,” told the husband/wife TV duo that she wasn’t a fan of her teen exploring the modeling world.
“I fought it for so long,” she said of her daughter’s decision to model. “It’s such a different industry now than it was.”
The “Blue Lagoon” star touched on the additional pressures today’s catwalk stars face, saying, “We didn’t have social media when I was a model” and calling today’s modeling industry “a rat race.”
While Shields specialized in print and didn’t walk the catwalk, she feared for her “ridiculously stunning” daughter after she said she was “interested in runway.”
“That’s brutal and backstage is just brutal,” she said, adding, “I never did runway, I don’t think I would’ve been able to handle it.”
Shields admitted that eventually, she “had to give in,” but set some ground rules.
“‘You are going to have a great work ethic, it’s not going to be comfortable, and you’re going to listen to me, those are my rules,'” Shields said she told her daughter, adding college was another stipulation.
The cover model also said she wouldn’t be her daughter’s manager like her protective mother was for her, and insisted that the teen sign on with a modeling agency.
Shields appeared on the show to promote her new documentary, “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” which follows her life and career.
The former child star also discussed her treatment by the press as a 12-year-old actress, saying how she was “hammered” and sexualized by the media.
“My daughters took real offense to that,” she said, referring to Grier and her eldest daughter, Rowan, 20.
As for Grier, we’re sure there are big things to come from this young model.
