Chelsea Handler shaded her ex-boyfriend Jo Koy Sunday night while hosting the 2024 Critics Choice Awards, poking fun at the fact he threw his writing team under the bus during his 2024 Golden Globes monologue.
After the former “Chelsea Lately” host joked at the awards show she would “toss around” Martin Scorsese like a “little Italian meatball” and the audience laughed, she remarked, “Thank you for laughing at that. My writers wrote it.”
The dig was well-received, with all the stars in the crowd cheering even louder for Handler after the comment.
Koy was widely criticized for blaming the writers for jokes that bombed when he hosted the Golden Globes last week.
The stand-up comic, 52, said when people did not laugh at the time, “Like I said, I didn’t write all of these. Someone else wrote that one.”
He also remarked, “I wrote some of these, and they’re the ones you’re laughing at.”
Koy has since admitted that some of his jokes fell flat, particularly his quip about Taylor Swift, which the pop star did not seem to like.
However, the “Joy Koy: In His Elements” comic also called out the “marshmallow” celebs in the room, who seemingly could not take a joke.
“I just come from a different time. I see the changes that are happening. I get it, but goddamn, can we f—king laugh at ourselves?” he recently said onstage during a show, per PvNew.
Koy has not addressed Handler’s comment on social media, so it’s unclear if he thinks his ex is also “soft.” His rep did not immediately return Pvnew’s request for comment.
Despite the jab, the former couple seemingly remained “great friends” following their July 2022 breakup.
Koy reiterated that sentiment to Pvnew as recently as last July, telling us at the time, “She’s a beautiful person, and, you know, we’re still friends.”
He added of her career, “She’s doing beautiful things right now. She’s crushing it right now, so I have nothing but the best love for her.”
Handler, for her part, has been more open about what led to the couple’s split after one year together.
The same month their breakup was /confirm/ied, the “Are You There Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea” author, 48, revealed the relationship ended because “you can’t change somebody intrinsically.”
“I was so inspired by us, but Jo didn’t crack me open. My psychiatrist cracked me open, and then I was open, and then I was able to bend for somebody,” she said at the time before noting that she was only “willing to do so much bending” until she reached “a line.”
