Savannah Guthrie’s career — and personal style — has come a long way.
The “Today” show host returned to her alma mater to give a commencement speech at Georgetown Law School and give some words of advice to the graduating class — including a look back at her own progress over the years.
“I worked in local television news, rising from market to bigger market with my reporter’s notebook and helmet hair and [a] red blazer when I decided to blow it all up and go to law school,” said Guthrie, who earned her undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Arizona in 1993.
Her subsequent detour into law — where she worked for a law firm before becoming a correspondent for high-profile cases on CourtTV — eventually led to her years-long career at NBC.
“Maybe law school was a big gamble for you, as it was for me,” Guthrie, 51, told the students. “Or maybe, it was your safety net. Maybe it was your way of avoiding the scarier path.
“Whatever the case, I’m telling you, anything interesting you want to do, anything meaningful you want to accomplish, it is waiting for you, it is possible for you, but it is on the other side of a big risk‚ on the other side of a big bet.”
On Instagram, Guthrie called the experience of returning to speak at Georgetown “magical” as fans praised her for her words of wisdom.
“Congrats Savannah—you are certainly a role model for all women, including my 4 daughters!,” said one commenter.
Another wrote, “It was a touching, inspiring, and meaningful speech. Thank you for making the day magical for the families of graduates!”
A third requested “then and now pix” of the helmet hair — and though Guthrie hasn’t reached into the archive yet, Pvnew Style dug up some vintage photos of the talk show host.
Clearly her hair styling has come just as far as her career.
