This red carpet look might have been a flop.
Jennifer Lawrence went for comfort at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival yesterday, sporting a pair of black flip flops under her bold red dress at the premiere of “Anatomy of a Fall.”
The “Silver Linings Playbook” actress, 32, wore the simple black sandals with a custom ball gown by Dior Haute Couture to the red carpet event.
While her basic beach shoes might have raised some eyebrows at Cannes — which is known to be famously strict about its no flats policy — her princess-like gown and diamond Dior necklace certainly fit the bill for French glamour.
Lawrence’s designer dress featured spaghetti straps and a soft ruffle at the bustline along with a matching red wrap, which the “Hunger Games” star draped across her elbows as she walked the red carpet.
Although she wore the comfy sandals for one premiere, the “X-Men” actress wore the same gown but changed into red satin heels for a project close to her heart at a premiere later on the same day.
Lawrence wore the more formal shoes to the premiere of a documentary she produced called “Bread and Roses,” which follows the lives of women living in Afghanistan after the Taliban’s resurgence.
Fashion fans seemed to be loving the look, like one Instagram user who commented on Check the Tag’s post writing, “You can’t see, but she has FLIP FLOPS ON!! I just love her so much for giving the middle finger to the sexist dress code!”
“She also wore black flip flops underneath her dress,” another fan wrote. “I love her!”
Lawrence isn’t the first star to push the envelope when it comes to shoes in Cannes.
Kristen Stewart famously removed her heels in 2018 and walked the red carpet barefoot to protest the glitzy film festival’s alleged anti-flats rule, which first came to light when several women were supposedly turned away for not wearing heels in 2015.
Shoes aside, Cannes has also cracked down on colorful outfits this year after Vogue writer Zach Weiss was turned away for wearing a bright orange suit jacket rather than sticking with the black tie theme.
As for Lawrence’s flip flops, perhaps she’ll kick off a new trend.
