Mama knows best.
Jenna Bush Hager got candid about an embarrassing remark her mother, Laura Bush, made to her and her twin sister, Barbara Bush, the night before she was set to marry Henry Hager.
During Thursday’s episode of “Today with Hoda & Jenna,” Hoda Kotb asked her co-host if she would ever “kiss and tell.”
“I try not to. But I’ve been married to one person for a long time, so I don’t kiss and tell about that relationship,” Jenna replied, referring to her nearly 15-year marriage to Henry.
After a snap from their May 2008 wedding day was shown on screen, she quipped, “Oh, thank you for putting up my wedding photo. That was the night it all happened, y’all! Just kidding.”
The “Sisters First” author then detailed what her mom said to her and Barbara, 41, prior to her nuptials.
“My sister and I spent the night the night before [my husband and I] got married, and my mom came in [singing], ‘You’re getting married! Let’s go change the sheets!'” Jenna, also 41, recalled.
“And Barbara goes, ‘Eww gross, mom! This isn’t ‘The Other Boleyn Girl!'” referencing the 2008 movie where two sisters contended for the love of King Henry VIII.
Jenna added, “I won’t even say what she said after that.”
The “Today” host has never been one to shy away from speaking about her relationship with Henry, 44, on her morning show.
Most recently, Jenna admitted that she gave her then-boyfriend a “manipulative ultimatum” years before they got engaged.
She shared that she had plans to leave Washington, DC, and wanted to see if he would stop her, telling him, “Now, listen, if you don’t want me to move to Latin America, we need to get engaged.”
The daughter of former President George W. Bush said that Henry took her out to a nice restaurant the following Valentine’s Day and they were given a bottle of champagne with a message tied around it that read, “Don’t go.”
However, she discovered that the message wasn’t written properly and it was supposed to have said, “Go, and when you come back, I’ll be here.”
“I was, like, ‘Yes, I will marry you,’ and [Henry’s] face dropped,” Jenna added. “I mean, he could have cried. Well, anyway, he was not proposing.”
Henry did not end up proposing until years later in 2007.
Now the couple has welcomed three kids — daughters Mila, 10, and Poppy, 7, and son Hal, 3 — and are just days away from celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary.
