Jameela Jamil slammed “famous feminists” who attended the 2023 Met Gala on Monday in honor of “known bigot” Karl Lagerfeld.
“Last night Hollywood and fashion said the quiet part out loud when a lot of famous feminists chose to celebrate at the highest level, a man who was so publicly cruel to women, to fat people, to immigrants and to sexual assault survivors,” she wrote in a lengthy Instagram post Tuesday.
“And all the women’s publications, and spectators online, chose to gleefully ignore it.”
The “Good Place” alum said people suddenly lost their “appetite to” “find someone’s tweets from when they were 12” when it came to the late designer.
“Nobody has perfect morals, least of all me, but Jesus Christ we had a year to course correct here, and not award the highest honor possible to a known bigot… and everyone just decided all of a sudden we can separate the art from the artists when *convenient*,” she added.
“And it’s one rule for us, and another rule for everybody else. Last night we relinquished our right to be taken at all seriously about anything important.”
In the caption, Jamil said her post wasn’t about cancel culture or Lagerfeld, but more so about “how selective cancel culture is within liberal politics.”
While Jamil did not call anyone by name, numerous A-listers attended fashion’s biggest night earlier this week, including Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Lizzo, Olivia Wilde, Rihanna, Lil Nas X, Jared Leto, Bad Bunny, Cardi B and many more.
The “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” star, 37, also slammed the Met Gala’s 2023 theme last year, when it was revealed to be a tribute to Lagerfeld.
In October, she shared a photo of the former Chanel creative director with the word “Nope” underneath and claimed he “used his platform is such a distinctly hateful way, mostly towards women, so repeatedly and up until the last years of his life.”
Lagerfeld had a complicated legacy aside from his influential fashion career, as he was known for making controversial remarks that were deemed fatphobic, racist and misogynistic by many.
The former Fendi designer, who died in 2019 at age 85, previously called singer Adele “too fat” and model Heidi Klum “too heavy.” (He later apologized to the “Hello” singer by gifting her several Chanel purses.)
He would also claim that fashion is “the healthiest motivation for losing weight” and say that anorexia was not as dangerous as junk food and television.
Lagerfeld also defended the stylist Karl Templer, who was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple models, saying that he was “fed up with it.” (Templer denied the allegations.)
“I read somewhere that now you must ask a model if she is comfortable with posing. It’s simply too much; from now on, as a designer, you can’t do anything,” he said in a 2018 interview with Numéro, per the Hollywood Reporter.
“It’s unbelievable. If you don’t want your pants pulled about, don’t become a model! Join a nunnery, there’ll always be a place for you in the convent. They’re recruiting even!”
In a 2009 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Lagerfeld said that French designer Coco Chanel “wasn’t ugly enough to be a feminist.” And the following year, he was heavily criticized for putting supermodel Claudia Schiffer in blackface and yellowface for a German magazine.
Fans agreed with Jamil in her comment section, with one even joking that the viral cockroach seen on the Met Gala steps was the late fashion designer reincarnated.
