Leave it to Cara Delevingne to make a memorable entrance on fashion’s biggest night.
The model paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld on the Met Gala 2023 red carpet Monday, from her “silvery blue hair” down to her “iconic white shirt.”
As this year’s “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” theme honors the late designer, it was an emotional night for Delevingne, who was Lagerfeld’s close friend and muse.
“I cried on the way here a little bit,” the 30-year-old told Vogue interviewers on the carpet.
“It’s an amazing way to remember him,” she added, noting that her outfit and Chrome Hearts jewelry “just felt right” for the occasion.
Notably, high-collared shirts were a favorite of the high-fashion fixture, as Lagerfeld once owned over 1,000 of them, according to a profile in The Independent.
After the Chanel creative director died in 2019, Delevingne posted a heartbreaking tribute on her Instagram, writing, in part, “He changed my life, he believed in me when so many others didn’t including myself … He is a visionary, a genius but more than that…. a dear friend.”
Delevingne has walked many Chanel runways, even opening the show featuring Lagerfeld’s last designs for the house the month after his death.
In 2022, she created a capsule collection with Lagerfeld’s eponymous clothing brand, called Cara Loves Karl, as a tribute to their relationship.
Ahead of the big night, she went down memory lane, posting a montage of videos with Lagerfeld and on the Chanel catwalk.

While Delevingne’s a Met Gala regular — and attended last year’s soirée topless and slathered with gold body paint — this marks her first appearance at the fashionable fête since seeking treatment for substance abuse issues late last year.
She opened up to Vogue about her addiction struggles for the magazine’s April cover story, revealing she was in a “bad place” and feared she might “end up dead” if she didn’t go to rehab.
In March, the newly sober style star looked stunning in a bold red Elie Saab Haute Couture gown at the Oscars.
Shortly after, the model further kick-started her “fresh start” by chopping her hair into a short bob, which transformed into her silver style for Monday’s Met Gala.
Delevingne has also said she plans to remove some of her many tattoos — which include tributes to her exes, family, friends and more — as part of her “new beginnings.”
