Warner Bros.’ “Wonka” continued its dominance over the U.K. and Ireland box office with £3.7 million ($4.8 million) in its fifth weekend, according to numbers from Comscore.
The Timothée Chalamet starrer has now amassed £53.3 million. In second place, another Warner Bros. title, “One Life,” starring Anthony Hopkins, which opened on Jan. 1, collected £1.7 million over the weekend for a total of £3.5 million.
In third position, in its second weekend, Sony’s “Anyone But You” collected £1.09 million for a total of £3.5 million. In fourth place, Warner Bros.’ “Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom” earned £938,355 in its third weekend for a total of £8.3 million.
Rounding off the top five was Elysian’s Miyazaki Hayao film “The Boy and the Heron” with £794,741 in its second weekend for a total of £3.1 million.
In sixth place, MUBI’s “Priscilla,” which also opened on Jan. 1, grossed £643,800 over the weekend for a total of £1.4 million. The other Top 10 debut was Universal “Night Swim” that collected £590,757 over the weekend.
The upcoming weekend Warner Bros. is bowing George Clooney’s directorial venture “The Boys in the Boat,” a 1930s-set story centered on the University of Washington’s rowing team, from their Depression-era beginnings to winning gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, wide across more than 300 locations.
Disney is bowing Yorgos Lanthimos’ awards season contender “Poor Things,” starring Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe, which recently won best motion picture, musical or comedy, and best actress for Stone in the category, at the Golden Globes.
Studiocanal is opening “The Beekeeper,” starring perennial action favorite Jason Statham. Dogwoof is releasing Sundance documentary title “The Disappearance Of Shere Hite.” From Miracle/Dazzler comes WWII-set superhero film “Freaks vs the Reich.”
India celebrates the Pongal/Sankranthi holiday on Monday, Jan. 15, and there are several films releasing to benefit from the long weekend, which is a public holiday in India but not in the U.K. and Ireland. Telugu-language action films, “Guntur Kaaram,” starring superstar Mahesh Babu, and “Saindhav,” headlined by veteran Venkatesh Daggubati and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, release Jan. 11 as does Malayalam-language crime thriller “Abraham Ozler,” starring Jayaram.
Tamil-language film period action epic “Captain Miller,” starring A-lister Dhanush, is due a Jan. 12 release and the date also sees the release of Sriram Raghavan’s thriller “Merry Christmas,” featuring Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi, in Tamil and Hindi-language versions and Tamil-language sci-fi film “Ayalaan,” starring Sivakarthikeyan. Telugu-language period action drama “Naa Saami Ranga,” headlined by Akkineni Nagarjuna, opens Jan. 14.
