“Spermageddon,” the Norwegian animated sex musical comedy that became one of the most talked about titles at this year’s Annecy Film Festival, has been acquired for France.
Originals Factory, the distributor that has released the likes of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Whale” and “20 Days in Mariupol,” has picked up the film, which has already been bought for territories around the world following its premiere last month. Charades has been handling sales.
Directed by Tommy Wirkola (“Dead Snow,” “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters”) and Rasmus A. Sivertsen (the “Louis and Luca” franchise), “Spermageddon” —described as “crude and heartwarming” by the filmmakers —tells the story of a teenage couple experiencing their first time and two sperm cells on a fateful journey to find the egg. Inspired by the likes of “South Park” and “Sausage Party,” the raunchy film features musical numbers and a whole load of talking sperm cells.

“‘Spermageddon’ marks our first step into feature animation,” said Originals Factory CEO Tristan Du Laz. “We’re thrilled and terribly excited to be working on such an original, daring and irreverent cinematic proposition, one that’s furiously in tune with the times. This film is a total favorite, and we can’t wait to share it with the young-adult audience for whom it is intended.”
Added Charades chairman Yohann Comte: “I couldn’t think of a better distributor for the film. Originals Factory has proved they were one of the only distributors who could be audacious and innovative enough to bring to the theaters the young adult audience with bold indie cinema proposals, while maximizing ancillary revenues.”
Charades has already shopped “Spermageddon” far and wide, with the filming selling to Square One Entertainment (Germany, Switzerland and Austria); Youplanet Pictures (Spain); MCF Megacom (Adriatics and Bulgaria); Film Europe (Czech Republic and Slovakia); Prorom Distribution (Hungary and Romania); Exponenta (CIS); Acme Film (Baltics); Creative Century Entertainment (Taiwan); Shinesaeng Ad.Venture (Thailand); Shaw Organization (Singapore); and SF Studio (Nordics and Iceland). Its Nordic release is set for Jan. 10, 2025.
“Spermageddon” is produced by Kjetil Omberg and Jørgen Storm Rosenberg of 74 Entertainment, in collaboration with Qvisten Animation, and co-produced by Stian Tveiten. It was written by Vegar Hoel, Jesper Sundnes and Wirkola.
