Academy Award and BAFTA winner Johnnie Burn has signed with CAA, becoming the first sound designer to do so.
The celebrated sound designer, supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer won an Oscar for best sound this year for his work on “The Zone of Interest,” reuniting him with Jonathan Glazer, with whom he previously partnered on “Under the Skin.” “The Zone of Interest” also took home the Academy Award for best international film.
Burn is also a longtime collaborator of Yorgos Lanthimos, having done sound for “The Lobster,” “Killing of a Sacred Deer,” “The Favourite,” and most recently, “Poor Things.”
His work will next be heard in Lanthimos’ upcoming film “Kinds of Kindness,” starring Emma Stone.
He has also contributed to “Nope” with Jordan Peele, “Ammonite” with Francis Lee, and “Waves” by Trey Edward Shults.
Burns is also working on Shults’ next feature, an untitled film starring Jenna Ortega, Barry Keoghan and the Weeknd. The morning after this year’s Oscars ceremony, he showed up to work at the Fox Studio Lot in L.A. to start mixing the project, but realized he had forgotten his ID.
As he told PvNew, Burn whipped out his new Oscar statuette. “I said, ‘Does this cover it?’ And he was like, ‘Woah, yes!’” Burn was driven over to the mixing building with an escort. “Looks like there are no downsides to Oscar ownership,” he quipped.
Before dedicating himself to film, Burn contributed to advertisements and music videos for artists including Travis Scott, Madonna, Prince, George Michael, David Bowie, Richard Ashcroft, UNKLE and The Spice Girls.
Among other accomplishments, Burn designed the sounds of Skype.
