Cord Jefferson will receive the Writers Guild of America West’s 2024 Paul Selvin Award for penning the screenplay for “American Fiction.” He will receive the honor at the 2024 Writers Guild Awards on Sunday, April 14, held at the Hollywood Palladium.
Jefferson adapted the script from the book “Erasure” by Percival Everett and also served as director on “American Fiction.” Among several honor honors for his film, Jefferson recently earned an Academy Award for best adapted screenplay on March 10.
Starring Jeffrey Wright, “American Fiction” follows a frustrated Black author who jokingly writes a novel rife with Black stereotypes —which, ironically, becomes a massive success. The film received critical acclaim was nominated for four other Oscars, including best picture.
Jefferson has previously written for a wide range of shows including “Survivor’s Remorse,” “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore,” “The Good Place,” “Master of None,” “Succession,” “Watchmen” and “Station 19.”
Previous recipients of the Paul Selvin Award include Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Barry Jenkins, Will Berson and Shaka King, and Kenny Lucas and Keith Lucas.
