Rachel Brosnahan spoke to PvNew On the Carpet presented by DIRECTV at the 2024 SAG Awards about gearing up to start filming James Gunn’s “Superman: Legacy,” in which she’s taking on the role of Lois Lane. The filmmaker posted the first cast photo last week after a table read of the script, and then Warner Bros. execs confirmed filming would officially begin next week.
“It was pretty amazing,” Brosnahan told PvNew’s Angelique Jackson about the “Superman” table read. “Some of us met for the first time. Some of us got to see each other again. It was amazing to hear the script out loud. As with all of these films, there’s a lot of action sequences and things. So to hear the pacing of the film and to get to hear these characters occupied by the actors who play them is really fun. It’s also a great group. You can’t ask for more than that when doing something like this.”
Brosnahan said she grew up watching Richard Donner’s “Superman” movies, which famously starred Christopher Reeve as the superhero and Margot Kidder as Lois Lane.
“I have always loved Lois Lane,” the actor added. “She’s smart, ambitious and can be funny. She knows she’s the smartest person in the room more often than not. When the opportunity came on…I’m such a fan of James Gunn from a far…we’re still finding these characters. We haven’t started shooting yet. You’ll meet the final version of them.”
“Superman: Legacy” marks Brosnahan’s first time co-leading a major Hollywood tentpole. She’s grateful she’s doing it with James Gunn, whose no stranger to comic book tentpoles as the writer and director of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy.
“James has been through this before a number of times. He’s been very helpful and given us a lot of great advice. He’s got a lot of devout followers. I’m a little nervous, but hopefully they feel good about everything we’re doing.”
David Corenswet, a veteran of Ryan Murphy shows such as “Hollywood,” is playing the new Superman. The two actors are joined by Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, plus Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Anthony Carrigan (metamorpho), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Nathan Fillon (Guy Gardner), Isabela Mercad (Hawkgirl) and more.
“Superman: Legacy” is set to open in theaters July 11, 2025 from Warner Bros.
