Mindy Kaling Netflix Basketball Comedy Series Adds Five to Cast, Including Chet Hanks and Keyla Monterroso Mejia

Mindy Kaling‘s new Netflix comedy series set in the world of pro basketball has added five new cast members, PvNew has learned.

The new cast members are: Fabrizio Guido (“Good Burger 2,” “Perry Mason,” “Mr. Iglesias”), Toby Sandeman (“Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” “The Game,” “Love Is_”), Chet Hanks (“Your Honor,” “Shameless,” “Empire”), Keyla Monterroso Mejia (“Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Abbott Elementary,” “You’re Cordially Invited”), and Roberto Sanchez (“Queen of the South,” “BMF,” “2 Fast 2 Furious”).

They join previously announced series lead Kate Hudson in the show, along with cast members Brenda Song, Drew Tarver and Scott MacArthur. The untitled series received a 10-episode order at Netflix in June 2021.

The official logline for the series states, “When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon (Hudson) is appointed President of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job, especially in the unpredictable, male-dominated world of sports.”

Guido will play Jackie Moreno, described as “a popcorn vendor at the stadium where the Waves play, Jackie can’t believe it when he is suddenly thrust into the inner circle of his favorite team. Now he has the opportunity to work his way up the organization from the ground floor.”

Sandeman will star Marcus Winfield, said to be “a generational talent. Marcus is still considered one of the best players in the league. But after two championship rings, two Olympic gold medals, and being a twelve-time All-Star, Marcus has mentally checked out from the Waves — and his lack of leadership has been affecting the team.”

Hanks will appear as Travis Bugg, “the Waves’ point guard who moonlights as an unsuccessful rapper. He’s a huge distraction on the court and an even bigger problem for Isla off the court.”

Monterroso Mejia joins as Ana Moreno, “Jackie’s cousin who is also a personal injury attorney. Ana is smart, ambitious and always looking for an angle.”

Sanchez will play Stephen Ramirez, “the intimidating head of the board who’s been with the Waves through generations of Gordons. He’s old-fashioned, no-nonsense, and a constant reminder of the old guard, making Isla desperate to prove she’s more than just Jack Gordon’s little daughter.”

Guido is repped by CESD, 23 Management Group, and Goodman Genow. Sandeman is repped by Gersh and Authentic Talent and Literary Management. Hanks is repped by Untitled Entertainment. Monterroso Mejia is repped by UTA, MGMT Entertainment, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman. Sanchez is repped by Global Artists Agency and Rothman / Andres Entertainment.

Kaling serves as co-writer and executive producer on the series along with frequent collaborators Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen, with Stassen also serving as showrunner. Hudson will executive produce in addition to starring. Jeanie Buss, president of the Los Angeles Lakers, will also executive produce along with Lakers executive director Linda Rambis as well as Howard Klein of 3 Arts. Jordan Rambis will produce. Warner Bros. Television, where Kaling and her Kaling International banner are under an overall deal, will produce.
