Google’s Tim Carter Named Vice President at AI Filmmaking Shop Flawless

Longtime Google executive Tim Carter has joined the artificial intelligence company Flawless as head of its Artistic Rights Treasury group.

The recently-announced division (A.R.T.) is a rights management platform for creative industries looking to advance with the use of AI, while still respecting creators and asset holders.

Carter will be named vice president of ecosystems, having most recently spent nine years at Google developing and expanding the Android platform. His expertise in IP law and systems will help implement the Flawless tech at scale for film industry labor agreements and working practices that apply to AI editing and content generation tools.

He will report to Flawless co-CEOs and co-founders Nick Lynes and Scott Mann.

“Tim is one of the world’s most capable and experienced individuals in this space, having succeeded in building and distributing not only the unparalleled Android ecosystem outside the U.S., but also platforms in global health, finance, and beyond,” said Lynes and Mann. “His unique background combining cutting-edge IP law with tech platforms and partner ecosystems will be invaluable as we continue to build A.R.T. into a revolutionary platform for the whole industry.”

A.R.T. hopes to solve practical, legal and commercial compliance issues in three areas: consent and control, credit and compensation, and transparency and reporting. Flawless does so using automated rights identification and labelling technologies. The ultimate goal, the founders said, is to improve films and decrease cost, as well as provide a path for artists and studios to monetize previous work while preserving their rights and controls.

Carter started his career as a commercial IP lawyer, he also co-founded eye health nonprofit Peek Vision, orchestrating partnerships with governments, NGOs and academic institutions worldwide to implement its revolutionary eye screening technology for remote health settings. He also provides strategy and growth advice as the founding member of the international board of Brazil’s leading antiracism organization, Instituto Identidades do Brasil.
