“Star Trek: Prodigy” has set its official launch date on Netflix.
Season 1 of the animated series will debut on the streamer on Dec. 25. The announcement was made as part of Netflix’s annual Geeked Week.
It was announced in October that the series would be moving to Netflix after it was canceled at Paramount+ despite having been renewed for a second season. Netflix will also be airing the second season, though there is no premiere date for it at the time of this publishing.
With the move, “Prodigy” will be the first new “Star Trek” series to air domestically outside of the Paramount ecosystem since the revamped “Star Trek” TV universe launched with “Star Trek: Discovery” in 2017.
Per the official description of “Prodigy,” the show follows “a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search of a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the ‘Star Trek’ franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents.”
The voice cast includes: Kate Mulgrew as Hologram Kathryn Janeway, Brett Gray as Dal, Ella Purnell as Gwyn, Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk, Angus Imrie as Zero, Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog, Dee Bradley Baker as Murf, John Noble as The Diviner, and Jimmi Simpson as Drednok. Also featured in the series are recurring voice cast members Daveed Diggs as Commander Tysess, Jameela Jamil as Ensign Asencia, Jason Alexander as Doctor Noum, Robert Beltran as Captain Chakotay, and Billy Campbell as Thadiun Okona.
Kevin and Dan Hageman developed the series along with Alex Kurtzman and his team at Secret Hideout. The Hagemans also serve as showrunners and executive producers. Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth also executive produce. Ben Hibon directs, executive produces, and serves as the creative lead of the series. Aaron Waltke and Patrick Krebs also serve as co-executive producers.The series is produced by CBS Studios’ Eye Animation Productions, Nickelodeon Animation, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment.
