Oscar Winner Hans Zimmer Signs With CAA

Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer has signed with CAA in all areas worldwide. He was previously represented by WME.

The composer and record producer, who won an Academy Award for Disney’s “The Lion King” in 1995, has five films set to be released this year, including “Top Gun: Maverick,” “The Boss Baby: Family Business,” Barry Levinson’s “The Survivor” and his two most anticipated projects, “Dune” and “No Time to Die.”

Speaking at last year’sPvNewFYC Fest, Zimmer spoke about working on the James Bond film alongside songwriters Billie Eilish and Finneas and score collaborator Johnny Marr. He acknowledged coming onto the project in late 2019 after another composer had come and gone. Zimmer explained, “The first thing that happened when I got to London was, they (the Bond camp) didn’t know which song to pick. And of course, there are a thousand songs that are being written. You know, a Bond song is an important thing. It carries a lot of weight with it. It’s like somehow lives depend on that you pick the right one! I pretty quickly heard Billie and Finneas’ song” — which had been turned in shortly before he came aboard — “and it was quite obvious that there was only one song that they could possibly pick that had class, charm, integrity, musicality and beauty, and was different and didn’t try to do the old thing. Would you like me to carry on about why I loved the song?” he laughed. “I was verybullish.”

In talking about the title track, Zimmer described it as “incredibly poetic and elegant” and “mysterious… like this beautiful perfume in a beautiful night that sort of goes past you.”

In 2014, Zimmer wasPvNew’s Billion Dollar Composer and was the first creative to meetPvNew’sbillion-dollar milestone 20-fold since the series was introduced in 1993.

Born in Frankfurt, but growing up as a teenager in London, Zimmer made his way into the music business as a keyboard player and synthesizer programmer (that’s him in the background of the Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star,” the first video played when MTV launched in 1981).

He learned about film scoring by assisting, then partnering with, British composer Stanley Myers (“The Deer Hunter”) on a series of films in the 1980s. In 1988, director Barry Levinson tracked him down to do “Rain Man” and Zimmer not only snagged his first Oscar nomination, but he also launched a Hollywood career that, in short order, produced “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Thelma and Louise” and “Backdraft.” The most recent of his Academy Award nominations was for his work on Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk.”

It’s not just film music Zimmer works on. Last year, Zimmer turned his attention to cell-phone ringtones. Chinese smartphone maker Oppo unveiled its latest, the Find X3 Pro, which offers two Zimmer-created ringtones and “an orchestra of system sounds.”
