Cannes, NewImages, Tribeca Launch Joint Exhibition Space XR3

Cannes XR, NewImages Festival and Tribeca Festival have partnered to create XR3, a virtual exhibition space that will host a selection of 50 XR projects from the three festivals’ programs.

Set to launch on Wednesday – the opening day for this year’s Tribeca and NewImages editions – the digital exhibition will be available via the Museum of Other Realities (MOR), a virtual gallery that specializes in innovative scenography.

The digital exhibition will run from June 9-20, concurrent with Tribeca and NewImages, and will go back online from July 6-15, just in time for Cannes.

Both Tribeca and NewImages will be making their full VR competition titles available, which include world premiere projects such as “Jailbirds – Bwa Kayiman,” “Marco & Polo Go Round” and “Madrid Noir” (pictured above).

“We are so excited to work with Cannes XR and NewImages Festival to present the XR3 platform this season at the Museum of Other Realities,” said Loren Hammonds, Tribeca VP of immersive programing. “It’s especially poignant in this year of transition to be presenting our three separate curations under one umbrella for at-home audiences.”

“We need all the solidarity possible at this moment,” NewImages director Michael Swierczynski tells PvNew. “We wanted to go big… to prove that festivals can complement rather than compete with one another, while showing the best VR projects from all around the world.”

Explaining his interest in the project, the NewImages director is quick to cite the textured interface provided by the Museum of Other Realities. “We want to present these projects within a digital scenography,” Swierczynski continues.

“As in a museum, where you have the scenography around the work of art itself, the MOR platform will create a similar model for the works presented. It’s important to show that, because these kinds of hybrid expos are the future. Digital platforms offer unlimited access, unrestricted by time or geographic distance.”
